Greenlight Bookstore Is Opening Second Location, In Prospect-Lefferts Gardens

Bookstores are not dead! Not only is Amazon.com opening a physical bookstore in Washington state (oh, the irony), but independent booksellers like Fort Greene’s Greenlight Bookstore are also thriving enough to expand –opening a second location, this time in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.

Located at 626 Flatbush Avenue (off Fenimore Street), the new bookstore will feature everything you’re used to, plus Greenlight’s offsite sales business. It is due to open “in the next year,” say owners Rebecca Fitting and Jessica Stockton Bagnulo.

They also told library website Shelf Awareness that it will be “closely tailored to its neighborhood and will host events and seek to partner with local institutions with the goal of becoming a true community space.”

Fitting, who lives in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, added: “Right now neighborhood residents have to travel pretty far afield to buy a book, but our plan is to change that by bringing a bookstore to 626 Flatbush. When an emotional investment and a smart business decision coincide, it’s a beautiful thing.”

  1. Hi, love the blog and appreciate you highlighting this great new addition to our neighborhood, but the geography is off. If this is the accurate address, the shop is only facing Flatbush Ave. There’s no access to the park from Flatbush for several blocks in either direction (only via Lincoln or Parkside) because of the subway gully, plus the park’s border street is actually Ocean — so Lefrak Center and the Park are useless as reference points.

  2. I was just thinking how awesome it would be if Greenlight would expand. How about a third location there is a vacancy on cortelyou next to the Q train????

  3. why is it an odd fit? It looks exactly like the location on Fulton in terms of size. And there’s a ton of foot traffic on Flatbush avenue.

  4. The fact that there are still some successful brick and mortar bookstores around doesn’t change the fact that, in general, such stores are succumbing to their digital competition. Nor is there any reason to expect this trend to reverse itself, or even slow down.

    The world is changing.

  5. They’re doing well precisely because there are so many fewer of them than there used to be. They lost a lot of ground in the marketplace. They might find a way to hold onto at least some of the ground they have now and perhaps regain a little, but we’re never going to go back to 1990.

  6. Well the good thing about being independent is they don’t have to answer to stockholders who expect unreasonable year-over-year growth. It’s a different business model, and Greenlight, at least, seems to be doing quite well with it.

  7. That’s obvious. The market has irrevocably changed. Digital product is one thing, but Amazon is the other. Indie bookstores have readjusted and are no longer just retail outlets. They’re cafes/event spaces/work spaces/bookstores. Or they’re smaller and specialized. Indeed, the world is changing and so is the concept of and need for the bookstore; no one is arguing that. But I don’t get the craven need to champion their demise at every turn when owners are trying to make them work with change.

  8. I don’t champion their demise. In fact, I think their demise SUCKS and I’ll do everything in my power to slow it down.

  9. That would be so awesome. There would be alot of support from this community. Especially with all the writers around the area. There’s a bunch of vacant locations around Ditmas park too.

  10. yeah i guess people who shop at bodegas and 99 cent stores don’t need books. besides….you should check out the strip now. there’s a lot more than bodegas, 99 cent stores, and fast food…..

  11. people are more likely to travel to an area to shop if it has unique retail. one bookstore and a bunch of other things that are on every corner is a weaker recipe for success than a bookstore dropped into a more diverse retail area. and, ok, maybe that stretch has more going on that a few blocks down the street.
