An attempted carjacking on East 6th Street near Avenue Z was stopped in its tracks when the suspect was scared off by a passenger’s screaming.

Cops say a 59-year-old woman was parking her car at the intersection just after 3pm on Thursday, January 1, when a man jumped into the back seat. The man demanded the driver and her passenger get out. The passenger began screaming, and the startled suspect leaped out the car and fled on foot.

The man is described as a white male, approximately 5’8″ and wearing a gray jacket, gray hat, gray sneakers and blue jeans. He had a goatee and mustache.

It appears one of the victims was able to capture cellphone photos of the suspect, which police are distributing.
