Governor Cuomo Proposes New Subway Station In Red Hook
RED HOOK – Governor Andrew Cuomo outlined 22 proposals during his 2018 State of the State Address in Albany Wednesday afternoon and discussed the urgent need to fix New York’s public transit system.
Cuomo’s Taking Steps to Revitalize Red Hook proposal supports an MTA study to explore options to improve transportation access to Red Hook and its surrounding communities, including a potential underwater tunnel that would allow for the extension of subway service from lower Manhattan into a new station in Red Hook.
The proposal also calls on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to explore options to relocate the Red Hook Container Terminal to the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park, with the goals of consolidating and improving maritime shipping activities and creating more community space in Red Hook.
“Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood is full of untapped potential, and with this proposal, I am calling on the Port Authority to accelerate consideration of relocating its Red Hook maritime activities to free up this waterfront for more productive community use,” the Governor said in a statement.
“I am also calling on the MTA to take steps to improve transportation options to Red Hook, including studying the potential of a new subway line to connect Red Hook to Manhattan,” he added.
