Gorilla Coffee’s New Bergen Street Location Is Now Open

Gorilla Coffee‘s second location at 472 Bergen Street, just a few blocks away from its 5th Avenue spot, officially opened this week. And as owners Carol McLaughlin and Darleen Scherer had stressed leading up to the opening, this space is all about customer engagement and education.

Working with designers from Own Entity, they built the new coffee bar to have little to no barriers between the barista and the customer, so you have a bit of a better view for what’s going on as your drink is prepared, and you can chat about where the coffee comes from and how it’s made. They’ve got two espresso machines, a La Marzocco Strada EP and a Modbar, both placed below the counters.

“We are committed to traceability and transparency in the coffee we source and this philosophy now extends through to the preparation of each drink and the design of our new space,” says Darleen.

If you’re just looking for a quick drip coffee or cold brew to go, though, they’ll be doing quick service up front — pretty handy if you catch the 2/3 train to work right there.

There’s seating to accommodate a couple dozen people, with two shared counters with stools in the back, tables for two across from the bar, and a couple spots to sit and watch traffic go by in the windows. For those looking for a place to work, they’ll have wifi here, as well.

Next up for Gorilla is its 4,000-square-foot roastery that will be located in Gowanus at 500 President Street, which they say will follow through with these ideas about transparency on a larger scale, showing their process of roasting, training, and preparation.

It’s all about the coffee, though, isn’t it? Well, just like at the 5th Ave spot, what they’re serving at the Bergen Street shop is really, really delicious. Enjoy!

Gorilla Coffee’s second location is at 474 Bergen Street near Flatbush Avenue; its first location is at 97 5th Avenue at Park Place. Hours at both are Monday-Saturday 7am-9pm, and Sunday 8am-9pm.
