Get Your Skate On At Roller Rinks Around Brooklyn

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, roller rinks were the place to be. Bad nachos, limbo, wipeout, hoping against hope that your crush would ask you to couple skate – we’re talking the stuff of tween dreams here.

While the roller rinks of our childhood aren’t as commonplace nowadays, it is still possibly to find spots around Brooklyn where you can get your skate on.

Starting in April, LeFrak Center at Lakeside will transform their 16,000 square foot ice skating rink into a roller rink. With skate sizes from toddler to adult, themed skate events, and reasonable admission prices ($6-$8), the Prospect Park rink is a fantastic local outing for the entire family. How about skating with a gorgeous view? Pier 2 Roller Rink, located in Brooklyn Bridge Park, also opens for the 2016 season starting in April. Easily accessible from the A,C,F,2, or 3 trains, familes can spend time soaking up the incredible Manhattan skyline, while gliding across the poured epoxy skate surface – which is a lot more forgiving than the concrete surface at Lakeside.

Can’t wait until April? Longing for the dark, disco ball roller rinks of days gone by? If you have access to a car, head to Staten Island – home of Roller Jam USA (236 Richmond Valley Rd). The rink hosts open skate sessions every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, with specials like free pizza night sprinkled in for good measure. Admission ranges from $6.50 to $9.50, there is an arcade, and they do host birthday parties.
