Gentile Partners With Italian Foundation To Fight Cancer

The following is a press release from the office of Councilman Vincent Gentile:

COUNCILMAN GENTILE PARTNERS WITH AMERICAN ITALIAN CANCER FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE FREE MAMMOGRAMS FOR WOMEN 40+

BAY RIDGE – Free mammograms will be provided by the American Italian Cancer Foundation for women 40+ thanks to a joint effort by Councilman Vincent J. Gentile, the Arab American Association of New York and the Arab American Breast Cancer Education and Referral Program (AMBER) to encourage local residents to put their own health and well-being first.

The American-Italian Cancer Foundation supports cancer research and education and seeks to serve the economically disadvantaged and medically underserved. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization will provide mammograms in a safe and secure “mobile mammography van” outside of the Arab American Association of New York’s main office located at 7111 Fifth Avenue on Thursday, December 15th from 10 AM until 5 PM.

“Early detection of breast cancer can save lives. I am proud to partner with the American Italian Cancer Foundation, the Arab American Association of New York and with AMBER to make sure that the women of our neighborhood have access to no-cost mammograms,” said Councilman Gentile.

“Through the AMBER project, we have discovered that many Arab American women face many barriers when accessing any kind of healthcare,” said Claudia Ayash, Co-Director of the Arab American Breast Cancer Education and Referral Program (AMBER). “We are excited to partner with the Councilman Vincent Gentile’s office, the Arab American Association of NY, and the Italian American Cancer Foundation to provide free mammography screening for this community in a convenient location with Arabic speaking staff to assist the women to help alleviate some of these barriers.”

To be eligible for the free screening, women must be at least 40 years of age, a New York City resident and have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months.

To schedule an appointment, women should call (718) 745-3523.

City Council Member Vincent Gentile represents Council District 43, which includes Bay Ridge, as well as parts of Dyker Heights, Bath Beach and Bensonhurst.
