Of all the succulent eye candy on display at the Bangladesh New Year’s two-day celebration in April, the animal face masks and puppets were a standout. Students at PS 179 and PS 230 created these under the aegis of Jill Reinier, the director of The Singing Winds, a local theatrical/storytelling group that performs traditional folk tales from around the world.

Now in a summer encore The Singing Winds is going to teach puppet-making to the general public at Albemarle Playground starting Wednesday, July 17 at 10am. It will host four Wednesday morning workshops, beginning July 17 and running through August 7, from 10am until noon. At each session, Jill will tell a new story at 11:30am.

Here’s the chance for you and/or your kids to construct papier-mâché puppets, do crafts, and play games. Cynthia Fortozo, an artist who worked with The Singing Winds on a production last year, will lead the workshops. Funded by NYC Partnership for Parks, the workshops are free and open to all ages. Albemarle Playground is located behind PS 230, between McDonald Avenue and Dahill Road, off Albemarle Road.
