What are parks for if not running around, playing with friends, enjoying the sunshine, and generally having fun and learning new things? That’s why it’s exciting that this spring’s inaugural CityParks Street Hockey program is coming to Sunset Park.

Beginning next Tuesday, April 19 and running through June 3, the FREE street hockey program will be open to youth aged 8-12, who will learn basic hockey skills, such as stickhandling, passing, and shooting. Of course, in the process, they’ll also end up learning invaluable lessons in teamwork, self-confidence, and coordination.

There are two sessions available: Beginners-level on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30pm and Advanced Beginner on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30pm. Both are free, but require advanced registration to secure your child’s spot.

As an extra bonus, the program is co-sponsored by the New York Islanders, who, while not guaranteed to make an appearance (although you never know), are helping to provide the equipment and instructors.

Sunset Park is one of three Brooklyn parks chosen to participate in this program this season; the other two are John J Carty Park in Bay Ridge and St. John’s Park in Crown Heights.
