Fort Greene Park’s The Place To Be This Weekend, With Free Movies, Jazz, And Another Wallabout Walking Tour
BY JULIAN MACRONE
It’s hump day, so naturally, you’re probably already looking forward to getting out of the office and enjoying the end of the workweek. Here’s a quick roundup of awesome free weekend programming courtesy of NYC Parks and the Fort Greene Park Conservancy!
Friday, July 24: Free Summer Movie: “Back to the Future Part II,” at dusk
Last month’s free summer screening of Big Hero 6 was a huge success, and the big screen will return to Fort Greene Park Friday night for the ‘80s classic Back to the Future Part II. Bring a blanket, snacks, and friends — Parks and Fort Greene Park Conservancy staff will be offering free lemonade to movie-goers, so don’t forget to stop by and say hello.
Saturday, July 25: Wallabout Historic Walking Tour, 11am-1pm
Join the Fort Greene Park Conservancy and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership for this month’s Wallabout Historic Walking Tour!
The neighborhood, most of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, has a beautiful mix of pre-Civil War homes and late 19th century industrial buildings. The walk will discuss how the neighborhood has developed since the Dutch first arrived in the early 1600’s and highlight notable residents, such as Walt Whitman.
The free two-hour guided tour begins at the Fort Greene Park Visitor Center, includes a 1.5 mile walk, and concludes at 99 Ryerson Street. Space is limited and registration is required.
The tours are supported by the NY Council for the Humanities.
Saturday, July 25: Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival, 3pm-7pm
Come on up to the Monument Plaza for an afternoon and evening of the finest jazz Fort Greene and Brooklyn has to offer! Neighborhood legend Eric Frazier has brought this amazing event to Fort Greene park for six years now, and if June’s Kick-Off event was any indication, we’re in for another spectacular summer of music.
The free concert will take place on the Monument Plaza adjacent the Visitor Center. Guests can enjoy the music while sitting on the newly restored Monument lawn panels — newly restored in partnership with the Central Park Conservancy.
