Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced today that Quashawn Smith, a 25-year-old Fort Greene resident, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for shooting at three NYPD officers sitting in an unmarked car.

At approximately 10:45 pm on October 7, 2015, three officers were on patrol in an unmarked black vehicle near Park and North Portland Avenues in Fort Greene when they saw three men standing on the sidewalk. The officers thought they recognized one of the men as a local robbery suspect, so they circled back in their car to take another look.

When the officers returned, one of the men had already left the area. Smith was crossing the street, pulling a piece of luggage. The second man, Davon Morrison, was standing on the sidewalk near the officers’ vehicle and began making a gesture with his hands, “pointing them like pistols,” according to Gonzalez’s statement. Smith then ducked between two parked cars, pulled out a gun, and started firing at the front of the officers’ car.

The three officers fired back at Smith, wounding him. Their vehicle was also shot from behind, shattering their rear window. The officers lost track of Morrison at this point, but pursued Smith, who fled the scene. None of the officers were injured during the incident, Gonzalez states.

According to police, a .45 caliber pistol was recovered from beneath a car parked in the vicinity of where the shooting took place. Smith’s DNA was found on the gun.

Smith was arrested on October 8, 2015 at Beth Israel Hospital where he went for treatment for a gunshot wound. He admitted to shooting at a black car and throwing a gun under another car while being pursued by cops, according to Gonzalez.

Morrison was also arrested on October 8 at a nearby residence. He pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal use of a firearm in April 2017 and awaits sentencing.

Smith was sentenced to 11 years in prison and five years post-release supervision following his guilty plea of second-degree attempted murder.
