Black Artstory Month

Where: Participating businesses along Myrtle Avenue, between Carlton and Classon Avenues

17th Annual BAMkids Film Festival
When: Saturday-Sunday, February 7-8
Where: Peter Jay Sharp Building, BAM Rose Cinemas, and elsewhere
What: The best shorts and features from around the globe. This year’s fun-tastic weekend features curated selections from the top children’s film festivals in North America—74 films in total, representing 30 countries, including an Oscar nominated animation short. Be sure to stop by the BAMkids lounge at BAMcafé after your film for animation activities, magic shows, face-painting, balloon-making, lunch, and more. Tickets sell out early, so avoid the tears—buy in advance!

Having recorded with artists like Chiddy Bang and Aloe Blacc, Williams performs keyboard-based ballads that showcase her soaring, soulful vocals.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7

Black ArtStory: Hammerstep On Myrtle
When: Saturday, February 7 from 3-5pm
Where: Ingersoll Community Center at 177 Myrtle Avenue
What: Presented by the Irish Arts Center. In the late 19th century, Fort Greene—home to over half of Brooklyn’s African American population— also became widely known as ”Young Dublin” for the large Irish population that settled on what is now Myrtle Avenue. Black Artstory Month explores the intersecting histories of Irish and African American communities in Fort Greene with an unforgettable performance by Hammerstep, a Brooklyn-based contemporary dance company whose cutting-edge choreography melds traditional Irish dance, tap and hip hop to address contemporary social and political issues.

UrbanGlass Open Studios

Where: UrbanGlass at 647 Fulton Street
What: See exciting glassblowing demonstration, make jewelry with handcrafted glass beads or, for 30-minutes, work one-on-one with an artist for an crash-course in the basics of glassblowing or flameworking. You will leave having crafted your own handmade heart object. Also, kiln fusing and sandblasting activities for all ages.

BAMcafe Live: Renee Manning
When: Saturday, February 7 at 9pm
Where: BAMcafe at Peter Jay Sharp Building at 30 Lafayette Avenue
What: Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Renée Manning celebrates her 60th birthday with a bash at BAMcafé, featuring a host of special guests performing a lively mix of jazz, blues, and R&B on strings. Best known for her rich, expressive voice, Manning has performed with such renowned ensembles as the Mel Lewis Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, and the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Orchestra.

Brooklyn Pop-Up Market’s Grand Opening
