Has Mezini closed?

We never received official word that former oyster and hookah place Mezini (492 5th Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets) had closed. Open for just over two years, the restaurant had been shuttered for some time. However, we didn’t have any answers as to what would be next for the space.

After South Slope News contributing writer Christine Bush saw some construction activity on Saturday morning, October 17, we stopped in later that day to speak with owner Inne Reckovic. He told us a new Italian restaurant would be opening up in the former Mezini space. “It is the same ownership as Mezini,” said Reckovic. “We plan to be opening in a few weeks.”

When asked what the name of the restaurant will be, he told us that he was still working on coming up with one.

It seems that the Mezini mystery has now been solved. We await a name and an opening, and we’ll get back to you as soon as the new Italian restaurant comes alive.
