Approximately a dozen former employees of I.S. 228 – David Boody Junior High School  (228 Avenue S) – gathered in front of the building today to protest the Department of Education for allegedly firing qualified teachers.

New12 reports:

About a dozen ex-teachers and aides claim the current principal of I.S. 228 either wrongfully terminated or forced them to retire. Protesters say this is a culture across the city that has resulted in dismal college readiness for graduating seniors.

“We have proof of coersion, abuse, harassment. Teachers lost their license. Good teachers. It wasn’t necessary,” one former employee said.

The protesters laid blame at the feet of principal Dominick D’Angelo, saying he forced out experienced teachers to save money.

“The game plan is never give them tenure, and your salaries will stay low,” said another former staffer.

The principal did not comment on the News 12 story, but at least one parent stood up for D’Angelo and the school as he passed by the protest.
