Food Stuffs: Ice Cream Sundaes At Arnor Crepes & Bubble Tea
Food Stuffs is a column exploring the gastronomic landscape of Bensonhurst and the surrounding neighborhoods. Each entry will cover anything and everything remotely related to food. Because here in Bensonhurst, food is always news.
Looking for a fun spot to sit with a friend and grab a sweet or savory snack? Look no further.
Arnor Crepes & Bubble Tea, located at 1425 West 10th Street, has been open only seven months, but its rainbow-hued, sleek design is already drawing a steady stream of customers. The fact that the cafe is located around the corner from Seth Low Intermediate School and Brooklyn School of Inquiry makes it an ideal hang out for our younger neighbors who are on their lunch break or just getting out of class.
Now that school is out and the weather is heating up, business is sure to pick up at Arnor. The whimsical front window leaves no doubt that ice cream and frozen drinks are the specialty at this quaint little eatery.
We tried the chocolate sundae ($5.75) and it was as delicious as it was beautiful to look at. Two frozen camel-sized humps of chocolate were drizzled with even more chocolate, and then stabbed with a Pirouline wafer and garnished with a thin cookie. Whipped cream tops off the dessert, creating one of those concoctions that are almost too pretty to eat.
The actual crepe is somewhat crisper and milder in flavor than one might expect from a French crepe — almost papery in texture — but perhaps the stiffness is necessary to hold the elaborate ingredients together like an ice cream cone. The cone is placed in a metal stand for stability, creating an unusual, hands-free eating experience.
While the crepe’s flavor and texture were somewhat disappointing, its fillings more than made up for it. Drippy, decadent, chocolatey, and rich are a few adjectives that came to mind when we consumed this magnificent monster of a dessert.
In addition to ice cream, Arnor serves heartier sweet crepes, filled with fruits, jams, custards, or Nutella, as well as savory crepes — often with a distinctly American spin, such as their B.L.T. ($6.50) and chicken salad ($7.95) crepes.
Arnor’s extensive drinks menu is as fun and refreshing as the crepes. Patrons can pick up an ice cold bubble tea, milkshake, coffee, or slushy for $4 or less.
All in all, the fast and friendly service, the bright and modern backdrop, and wide selection of refreshing, frozen desserts all make Arnor the perfect summer staple for neighbors of all ages.
