NYPD officers arrested a 16-year-old suspect for the fatal shooting of Gerald Cummings, father and husband, on August 3 near P.S. 6 on Snyder Avenue.

Adonis Barnett, 16, had been part of a group that reportedly stole an expensive hat from Cummings’ 17-year-old son, Gerald Sealey, the previous week, say cops. When Sealey spotted the thieves at a Bedford Avenue basketball court, he called his father who immediately confronted Barnett and his friends, snatching the Don C Oakland Raiders hat off one of their heads. The fight escalated and Barnett allegedly took out a gun from his backpack and shot Cummings twice, say cops.

Barnett was arrested at his Flatbush home on Thursday, August 19 and arraigned the next day at Brooklyn Criminal Court. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon, and held without bail.

The special-edition Oakland Raiders hat had a snakeskin bill, and has been listed on eBay between $175 and $400. Sealey saved up for the hat by working a summer job, said his widowed mother Migdalia Cummings, 38, reported the New York Daily News.

“My husband died in my son’s arms,” said Migdalia Cummings. “He gave up his life to save my son. My son picked up my husband while they were still shooting and he said, ‘Dad, don’t go!” reports the Daily.

Police also arrested 16-year-old Romell Baptiste on August 5, who was with Barnett at the crime scene, say cops. Baptiste was charged with robbery and criminal possession of stolen property, reports the Daily.
