Flashback Friday: Work Of “Peace” Vandals

Photo via Brooklyn Visual Heritage

The protest material has changed.

The photograph was taken at night, showing graffiti on the base of a column in Prospect Park that reads “PEACE NO H-BOMB.”

Taken in 1950, the photo caption reads: “WORK OF ‘PEACE’ VANDALS: Pillars at 3d St. entrance to Prospect Park with ‘peace’ slogans smeared in aluminum paint. Four men and a woman, arrested yesterday, are charged with Memorial Day conspiracy to commit malicious mischief.”

The image is part of the Brooklyn Collection at the Brooklyn Public Library, and you can find more historic images like this one there or through Brooklyn Visual Heritage. The photo originally ran in the Brooklyn Eagle.
