Flashback Friday: Tercentenary Parade At Grand Army Plaza
A very different kind of parade took place in 1936, and had quite the long parade route. It also serves as a good reminder that Brooklyn is part of Long Island, too. This Long Island History parade started in Downtown Brooklyn, passed through Grand Army Plaza, and went all the way to Riverheard, Long Island.
Taken in 1936, the photo caption reads: “Image of parade and festivities comemmorating [sic] three hundred years of Long Island history; most images show scenes from parade on Eastern Parkway near Grand Army Plaza (parade route went from Downtown Brooklyn to Riverhead, Long Island); Shows four men in Dutch and American Indian costume on float representing “Brooklyn’s Earliest Traders, The Dutch Settlers”; hill in right background probably showing slope of former reservoir on Eastern Parkway, now Mount Prospect Park.”
