Flashback Friday: Brooklyn Dodgers’ Pitcher Preacher Roe Meets With Park Slope Fan
Sometimes it’s worth taking a trip out of the city — especially if you get to meet a handsome fella from back home.
This image was taken during a Brooklyn Dodgers spring training game in Vero Beach, Florida on March 4, 1952. Left-handed pitcher Preacher Roe pitched for the Dodgers from 1948-1954.
The original caption reads: “Lowdown Down South: Dodger fan Barbara Millett of Park Slope, enjoying vacation in Florida, stops off at Vero Beach to chat with Preacher Roe and find out how Flock will do this year. Preach here gives her inside info.”
The image is part of the Brooklyn Collection at the Brooklyn Public Library, and you can find more historic images like this one there or through Brooklyn Visual Heritage. The photo originally ran in the Brooklyn Eagle.
Another local connection to the team — did you know the Ebbets Field (former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers) flagpole currently stands outside of the Barclays Center?
