Council Member David Greenfield will be funding four projects in his district following the results of this year’s participatory budgeting (PB) process.

Over 2,300 people in Greenfield’s district — which spans Borough Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst — voted in the PB process in late March and early April, deciding how to allocate $1.2 million of public money.

According to Greenfield’s office, the winning projects were the top four vote-getters from a ballot containing 13 projects and initiatives suggested by residents. Those projects will be funded in the upcoming  2016-17 City budget, which goes into effect on July 1st.

“More people cast a ballot in my district this year than ever before,” Greenfield said. “I am thrilled to fund these projects that my constituents have decided are a priority. After all, nobody knows the community better than those who live there.”

Winning Projects (44th Council District):
District-wide street resurfacing by the Department of Transportation — ($200,000);
Ambulances for Hatzolah Volunteers — ($250,000);
New OHEL Community Center — ($500,000); and
Beth Jacob UPK Rooftop Jungle — ($250,000).

Council Member Greenfield said his office will also be securing $100,000 for NYPD security cameras in Benshonurst, which was the first runner-up project in the PB vote.

Information about PB voting results in Council Member Lander, Eugene and Williams’ districts can be found here.

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers voted this Spring on how to spend public dollars via Participatory Budgeting — the highest turnout yet in five years. This year, 28 City Council districts participated, up from just four when PB started.
