Fire At 88 Prospect Park West Displaces Residents For Months

NYC Council Member Brad Lander (39th District) posted a message to his Facebook page yesterday urging Brooklynites to help Park Slope families displaced by a fire last Saturday (March 4) evening.

“This past weekend, a fire broke out in the basement of 88 Prospect Park West, destroying four apartments and temporarily leaving the building without hot water, electricity and plumbing. For now, none of the residents can return to their homes,” his post states.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 8:43pm. FDNY says electrical work on the building was the cause. When the electricity was re-energized to the 4-story, 25-unit building, it ignited flames at multiple points, according to a spokesperson for the FDNY. The three-alarm blaze was put out by 1:10am, with 138 firefighters responding.

One civilian and three firefighters were treated at New York Methodist Hospital for minor injuries.

Many residents will not be able to return home for a couple of months (mostly families of 2 to 4, some with pets). Lander asks locals with available space to take in some of their displaced neighbors.
