Extensive, Expensive Vandalism at Green-Wood Cemetery
Very sad to hear this report from our friends at Green-Wood Cemetery, where, on Tuesday morning, workers discovered widespread vandalism to several gravestones, monuments, and more. From Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman’s blog:
Ken Taylor, Green-Wood’s long-time vice president for operations, estimates that the damage is “well in excess of $100,000.”
Click over to read more and to see several photos of the vandalism. Jeff says that it’s the worst damage he’s seen since he first started visiting the National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Work has already begun on restoration, but obviously it will be costly. They’ve set up a place where the public can make donations to help with repairs–visit that site here. Or, if you’ve never been to the cemetery, now’s a great time. The Battle of Brooklyn commemoration is this weekend–stop by and show your support, then consider making a donation to this great space that’s so close to home.
He also notes that a security camera recorded one possible suspect, and that the Hate Crimes unit is handling the case. If anyone knows anything more about the crime, you’re asked to call the 72nd Precinct at 718-965-6311.
