Explore The Wonders Of Marine Park This Saturday With Sheepshead Bites’ Top Naturalist
Readers of this site are probably familiar with the work of Daniel Frazer, who recently published articles about the wildlife in southern Brooklyn. He has also written stories related to history and architecture on our sister site, Bensonhurst Bean.
This Saturday, Daniel will be leading a trek through Marine Park’s salt marsh in search of the area’s wonderfully diverse and beautiful wildlife. And we encourage you to go. As Daniel noted in his most recent article, millions of birds are settling in New York City this time of year as they make their annual migration. If you’ve ever expressed an interest in birding, or just wanted to get more familiar with the animals that share our borough, this trip is a great way to get started.
Daniel said he’ll be showing people how to find birds of prey like falcons, hawks, and eagles (He spotted a bald eagle in the park earlier this week) as well as ducks, geese, and songbirds. He’s also hoping to locate a few muskrats, rabbits, and raccoons along the way.
Those who attend can also expect a lesson in the local ecosystem as well as a crash course on nature photography. If you love Daniel’s photos, this will surely be a huge draw. Be sure to bring binoculars if you already have them, but Daniel will have an extra pair, as well as a spotting scope, to lend out.
The trip starts at 11am and is expected to last for two hours. You should meet Daniel at the Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Center, located near Avenue U and East 33rd Street. Be sure to RSVP by emailing Daniel at danielericfrazer@gmail.com.
