The effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt in the subway system, and we’ll notice it much more this summer when the MTA shuts down the G train for 12 weekends to make repairs to the line’s Greenpoint tube. During the storm, three million gallons of salt water flooded the tunnel, causing serious damage to the tunnel’s pump controls, electrical, communications, fan control, and signal equipment. The weekend repairs are part of the MTA’s “Fix & Fortify” work, which will repair what was submerged, while reinforcing system to make it less vulnerable to future severe weather events.

Here’s what you need to know:

Weekends affected: July 6-7, 13-14, 20-21; August 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 24-25; September 7-8, 28-29; October 5-6; December 7-8, 14-15, from midnight Friday to 5am Monday.

• The G train will operate between Nassau Av and Church Av during weekend closures.

No service at Greenpoint Av, 21 St, and Court Sq during weekend closures.

Shuttle bus service operates between Nassau Av and Court Sq, making subway stops during weekend closures.

• Next summer, the MTA intends to close the tunnel 24/7 for a five-week period in the summer of 2014.

And in case you switch to the R train during your commute, you should know that additional Sandy Fix & Fortify work will shut down the R tunnel under the East River for up to 14 months starting in August.
