Espresso 77 Officially Opens In Former 7th Ave De Luxe Space

Coffee is back at 410 7th Avenue (between 13th and 14th Streets) after Espresso 77 opened their doors on May 29.

The new cafe has a warm and friendly atmosphere, much like its predecessor De Luxe, and co-owner Julie Nymann tells us that she and her husband Afzal Hossain, who also own a cafe of the same name in Jackson Heights, are actually good friends with Andy and Tina, and that they even recruited Tina to design Espresso 77’s window.

Those familiar with the De Luxe layout know that the small space did not offer a lot of seating. That holds true for Espresso 77, too, but if you arrive at an opportune time (like 8:20am on a Sunday morning), the dining area is yours for the taking.

The room is bright and cheerful, with artwork by Afzal adorning the walls.

Over at the counter, customers will find the wickedly cool Faema machine from De Luxe, now whipping up tasty Gimme Coffee drinks (a cafe au lait, $2.50, was wonderful), as well as a nice selection of pastries.

The cafe also serves a handful of sandwiches and breakfast plates, including the challah French toast with maple syrup and fruit (pictured above, $8.50). As the temperatures around the city start to climb, you’ll definitely want to give their chocolate banana smoothie a whirl, too ($4.50). It was a hit for both the grownups and the extraordinarily picky 4-year-old in our party.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Espresso 77! If you find yourself up 7th Avenue way, be sure to stop by and say hello.

Espresso 77 is open Mondays through Thursdays, 7am to 9pm; Fridays, 7am to 10pm; Saturdays, 7:30am to 10pm; and Sundays, 8am to 10pm. Credit cards are accepted.
