Emily Spinoff, Emmy Squared, Will Move From Clinton Hill To Williamsburg
Unfortunately, Emily’s (919 Fulton Street) second pizza joint won’t be a few doors down on Fulton Street after all. Instead of Clinton Hill, Emmy Squared will be moving to Williamsburg.
The change reportedly comes after a legal dispute with the landlord of the Fulton Street building where Emily and Matt Hyland and their chef/partner Lou Tomczak had already signed a lease for back in November. There is no word from the landlord or pizza-restauranteurs of any other details.
Emmy Squared — serving Detroit-style square slices along with a full bar — will be at 364 Grand Street, adjacent to the BQE and inside the former Bill Baker’s Restaurant and Bar.
The move means that the pizzeria/bar has more space than originally anticipated, so it will be more restaurant than planned, but co-owner Matt Hyland told GrubStreet New York that:
. . . the decision was abrupt, but. . . the new space is much larger, too, and will have at least 50 seats and a bar instead of just operating as a holding pen for pizza boxes. Takeout will still be available, of course, and the food will be the same mix of Italian-American sandwiches and Detroit-influenced square pies that’s been part of the plan since the beginning, but there may be more toppings and possibly snacks. Don’t expect any major delays for the opening, though, which Matt says is on schedule for this spring, as the space is already built out and won’t need a lot of work.
We’re sad to see Emmy Squared leave the neighborhood, but we’re also delighted for the folks at Emily on this surprise expansion of their brand.
What do you think of the move? Will you trek over to Williamsburg to try Emmy Squared out?
