BENSONHURST – Muslims in Brooklyn are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, which begins tonight at sundown.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two main holidays in Islam (the other being Eid al-Fitr, which commemorates the end of Ramadan).

On Friday morning, September 1, a prayer and celebration event will take place at Bensonhurst Park, with the first prayer starting at 8:30am. Organizers are expecting more than 5,000 people to attend.

This Eid al-Adha celebration has been happening for 8 or 9 years, said organizers, though smaller events have been held in area parks for more than 20 years.

The event is sponsored by the Arab Muslim American Federation, the Muslim American Society of Bay Ridge and Staten Island, and the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge.
