The Park Slope Civic Council is inviting the community to the Prospect Park Picnic House on Wednesday, October 19. Yes, there will be local food, drink, and conversation.

However, the goal of their 5th Annual Food For Thought event is to nourish the educational soul of local students.

The event will take place from 6:30pm-9pm on October 19 at the Prospect Park Picnic House. Tickets can be purchased in advance online.

“It’s one of the most important things we do in the neighborhood,” Park Slope Civic Council co-President Gilly Youner told the Park Slope Stoop. “It also gives people a chance to taste food and drink from our local restaurants.”

Each scholarship is awarded to an outstanding high school senior who exhibits exceptional commitment to community service. The graduating students are from one of the Secondary Schools at John Jay High School.

PSCC’s goal is to establish an endowment for the scholarships from surplus funds raised by the event.

Melinda Morris created FFT five years ago and is the chair for the event. You may also know her as the co-owner of Lion In The Sun. “We wanted to find a way to increase the scholarship program at John Jay,” she said. “We wanted to do more than just provide money for books.”

Each scholarship is $2000.

Food and drink will be provided by many local favorites, including al di là Trattoria, Hey Hey Canteen, Luke’s Lobster, Miti Miti Margarita Bar & Bistro, Palo Santo, Rose Water, Runner & Stone, and many others.

Youner hopes to build more and more awareness of the event each year. “We’d like to get more newcomers involved and to see what we’ve done,” she says. “We hope this community, with increasing higher income, will maintain attention to its people with lower income.”

Sponsors for the event include Assemblymember James Brennan, The Brownstone Agency, Corcoran Real Estate, Goldin Management, Investors Bank, Lion in the Sun, Kerry Quade, and StoryKeep.
