Doughnut Plant Now Open On Flatbush Avenue

Neighbors with a sweet tooth can — and did, based on the lines — satisfy it with a new kind of doughnut on Flatbush Avenue starting today.

Doughnut Plant opened Wednesday morning at 245 Flatbush Avenue, between Bergen Street and 6th Avenue, in the former Yummy Taco space. The fancy doughnut shop, which launched its first bakery on the Lower East Side in 2000, announced it would be opening its third location — the first in Brooklyn — this past summer.

Their space in the triangular building is lovely, with seating along the window inside and out, and a good amount of room even with a crowd inside. They note on their website that they had fun working with the space.

“We took some architectural details from the exterior and worked them into our design — even the bathroom is a tribute to the building’s history, covered in tin tiles we salvaged from the original space,” they write.

Clearly neighbors had been waiting to check it out, ready for a taste. The line was nearly out the door when we stopped by, but the staff, including owner Mark Isreal, managed it quickly and happily, answering questions about the roughly two dozen creative varieties that were being constantly juggled in the back, and pouring cup after cup of coffee, which they’ll carry from Intelligentsia, Toby’s Estate, and a guest roaster, City of Saints.

Doughnut Plant seasonal flavors

Known for funky doughnut flavors, now is a particularly great time to check it out — their holiday doughnut lineup includes marzipan stars, gingerbread, panettone, and triple chocolate mint. We dug into several of the special flavors, and a few of the popular regulars, like tres leches, blackout, and PB&J, and though you really can’t go wrong with any of them, we’d say you should try the gingerbread while you can — it’s a warmly spiced cake doughnut with bits of candied ginger tucked beneath the glaze, and it’s incredible.

They don’t, of course, come cheap — prices range from $2.50 for a Doughseed (a hefty doughnut hole, essentially) to $3.75 for larger doughnuts like the filled square ones. But while you can get some less expensive doughnuts at a variety of spots around our area, these ones are something of a different beast, and will make a fun, special occasion treat.

The shop will be open from 6:30am-10pm daily. For more info, you can reach them at 212-505-3700.
