Double Whammy: Heat Advisory + Air Quality Alert Issued Today
Looks like it’s going to be a scorcher today.
Update: The heat advisory has been extended through Friday, July 21
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for New York City until 6pm on Thursday, July 20. A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity makes it feel like 95–99 degrees for two or more consecutive days or 100–104 degrees for any length of time.
The NYC Heat Index is expected to climb into the upper 90s on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, but the high humidity and stagnant air are also triggering an Air Quality Health Advisory until tomorrow at 11pm.
New York State Department of Health recommends limiting strenuous, outdoor physical activity for active children and adults, and people with respiratory problems.
The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is opening cooling centers today throughout the five boroughs — to find a map of the cooling center closest to you, go here or call 311.
