SRO Illegal Conversion

Does the electricity for your apartment come in through an extension cord? Do you padlock your front door? Is the Department of Buildings oblivious to your cellar or attic apartment?

Community Board 7, Councilmember Brad Lander, and Councilmember Sara Gonzalez are hosting a forum this evening, Monday, March 4, to help neighbors sift through the often confusing world of SRO, defined by 311 as “one or two room units that lack a complete kitchen and/or bathroom, or shares them with other units,” and illegal home conversions, like the ones mentioned above.

Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights reports that the Department of Buildings, the Department of Health and Mental Health, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, FDNY, the Fifth Avenue Committee, and Neighbors Helping Neighbors are all expected to attend.

The session will be held in the CB7 offices, 4201 4th Avenue (entrance on 43rd Street), at 6:30pm. For more information, contact Community Board 7 at 718-854-0003.
