Summer’s not quite over, but it is time to start thinking about the upcoming school year — particularly about shopping for school supplies. While you’re out scouring sales to find everything on your child’s list, why not pick up a few extra supplies for students in need, if you’re able to? Operation Backpack is once again collecting donations to help make this school year a great one for lots of kids.

The program, which provides new backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies to children who are homeless throughout New York City, is hoping to collect 15,000 backpacks this year. You can help by donating a filled backpack (supply checklists are available here), labeling it with the appropriate grade and a note if it’s missing any supplies so they can add them, and drop it off at the Duane Reade at 296 Flatbush Ave, on the corner of 7th Avenue (or any Duane Reade in the city). Additional drop-off locations are listed here.

They note that they’re always short on certain supplies, and would particularly appreciate donations of academic planners, calculators, USBs, and subject dividers. Or, if it’s easier, you can also make a cash donation online.

You can also organize an Operation Backpack drive at your company, club, place of worship, or wherever. To learn more, contact Colleen Magri at 212-496-4307 or cmagri@voa-gny.org.
