Don Chingon Now Open On Flatbush Avenue

In Park Slope, 2015 is quickly becoming the year of the Mexican restaurant, with several new spots opening or coming soon — including Don Chingon, which opened Wednesday on Flatbush Avenue, where Fish & Sip closed this past fall.

The space, located at 216 Flatbush Avenue near Bergen, has gotten a bit of a makeover, including a new mural on the Bergen Street side. We took a quick peek at the menu, which includes Mexican fare like tacos and burritos, and it looks like a pretty good spot to grab a bite after work or before an event at Barclays.

Ok we are opening Don Chingon in Brooklyn off the 2-3 BERGEN STOP

Even though it just opened last night (they’re currently opening daily at 4pm, though they hope to add lunch soon), there’s already a glowing review on Yelp, which praises the selection of tequila and mezcal, and recommends the tortilla soup and the tacos:

The masa is pressed to order, and the tacos are soft and pillowy. The chicken taco was good, loaded with salsa and cilantro, as was the tempura battered pollack, with cabbage, salsa, and pickled onions. But the carne asada was the standout, with habanero, grilled pineapple, and perfectly cooked steak: a great combination of sweet and spice.

Yum.

Don Chingon is pretty well situated on Flatbush — close enough to attract a Barclays crowd, but far enough from the numerous other Mexican restaurants we’ve got set for the area. So far this year, we’ve seen Rachel’s open a new delicious taco spot, Varrio 408 (412 5th Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets); we’ve heard that a Sunset Park favorite will be opening Las Rosas Grill (161 7th Avenue, between Garfield and 1st); and, while not quite in the same vein, competition even so, as Chipotle will be opening an outpost at 185 7th Avenue, between 1st and 2nd Streets.

We’re definitely looking forward to giving it a try. If you stop by this weekend, let us know what you think!
