After years of talks about creating a dog run in our area, advocates are saying the canine-friendly space may be closer to becoming a reality.

Lynn Radov, a member of the group Fellowship in the Interest of Dogs and their Owners, better known as FIDO, told us that the city Parks Departments appears to have given the thumbs-up for the formation of a dog run near Caton Avenue and Coney Island Avenue, at the Parade Grounds.

“The Parks Department has given verbal approval, but all is dependent on funding and having a strong association to care for that dog run,” Lynn wrote to us yesterday.

We’ve reached out to the Parks Department to find out more about the possibility of a dog run and will update you as soon as we hear back from them.

With the city’s tentative go-ahead, Lynn said FIDO hopes to galvanize efforts to bring the run to fruition, and the group will hold a meeting about the run this Monday, February 23 at 7:30pm at 346 Coney Island Avenue, in the recreation room. During the meeting, Lynn said she hopes to have some news about funding for the dog run.

Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting, and no RSVP is required. If you have other questions about the gathering, email Lynn at lpradov@mindspring.com.
