Ditmas Park’s Front Yards

Ditmas Park’s Front Yards

Gardens throughout Ditmas Park bloom an ever changing landscape of pinks and blues, reds and greens, yellows and oranges. Each front yard is a square creating our neighborhood mosaic. I’ve captured front yards as diverse as our residents.

This isn’t a Top 10 Best Yards list. Many of my favorite yards (the rose garden on Glenwood or the peach tree nestled near the honey bees on Marlborough) I walked by without my camera. I also don’t have pictures of yards sown by our local professionals and bloggers like the Flatbush Gardener, the Flatbush Fig Farm, and Tracey Hohman. Instead, yards shown here I happened to walk by while carrying my camera. If you have a picture-worthy yard, send us photo to ditmasparkcorner@gmail.com.

Some of our neighbors use their precious Brooklyn dirt for vegetable gardens. Caretakers for these yards built trellises for their squash to climb.

This hedge is a soft alternative to separate private and public space. Just be sure to keep your hedges trimmed. The bottom one, on the corner of Ditmas and Ocean Ave, has branched out into pedestrian territory.

Impatients packed together and sweeping up the stairs liven this swatch of green.

And some of our neighbors prefer a manicured lawn with symmetrical rows and tiers, severe topiary, or waves of green.

Does your yard need an upgrade? Grab inspiration from these gardens. Or, while you amble through the neighborhood, make note of what you like. If a neighbor is weeding their tomatoes, ask what the plants are named and where they found them. Gardeners love to talk about their plants as much as parents love to talk about their kids.
