Trivia night at Sycamore
When: Monday, January 9 at 8pm.
Where: Sycamore Bar, 1118 Cortelyou Road between Stratford and Westminster Roads.
What: Featuring 5 rounds of trivia that’ll be sure to shake loose those winter blues, plus drink prizes and upscale pub grub food from The Loving Bite. Teams & individuals welcome.

Local art show: Paintings of Pictures
When: Tuesday, January 10 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
Where: The Farm on Adderley, 1108 Cortelyou Road.

‘Death Cafe’ at Green-Wood Cemetery
When: Tuesday, January 10 from 6pm to 7:30pm.
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery Chapel.
What: Brooklyn’s historic cemetery kicks off 2017 by joining a popular tradition (hosted in 26 countries around the world): a salon-type gathering for people to talk about death. Death educator Amy Cunningham will host a monthly gathering of the Death Café in the Green-Wood chapel. Come out to talk, listen, learn, and enjoy light snacks.

Boardgame night at Hinterlands
When: Tuesday, January 10 from 7pm to 11pm.
Where: Hinterlands Bar, 739 Church Avenue between East 7th & East 8th Streets.
What: The first in a regular series of board game nights will feature Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island — but you can also BYO game! This event is 21 +
How much: Free to play, but don’t forget drinks at the bar.
PLG Nonfiction Book Club
When: Wednesday, January 11 at 7:30pm & second Wednesday of each month.
Where: Greenlight Bookstore PLG, 632 Flatbush Avenue at Fenimore Street.
What: Looking to read more in 2017? Explore nonfiction books in a community setting with topics in classic and contemporary nonfiction led by store manager Geo. For January, the book group reads Create Dangerously by Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticata. Email geo@greenlightbookstore.com to join the list.

Drop the Mike Comedy show
When: Wednesday, January 11 from 8pm to 10pm.
Where: Sycamore Bar, 1118 Cortelyou Road between Stratford and Westminster Roads.
What: Female stand-up comedy close to home! Hosted by Kendra Cunningham, this month’s lineup includes: Emma Willmann (Colbert), Liz Miele (Gotham Live), Aminah Imani (NBC), and Danny Cohen (Comedy Central).

Jazz: School of Tristano w/ Eric Rasmussen, Nate Radley, Dave Ambrosio & Matt Wilson
When: Wednesday, January 11 at 8pm (doors at 7:30).
Where: The Owl Music Parlor, 497 Rogers Avenue between Midwood and Maple Streets.
What: Check out this jazz quartet playing eight works by Lennie Tristano & more, as they use original recordings as a launching pad for improvisation. Preview the album here.

Pop-Up art show: Intersection at the Junction
When: Thursday, January 12 at 6pm to 9pm.
Where: The Junction at Flatbush & Nostrand, starting at 1449 Flatbush Avenue.
What: Preview the art installations for this year’s art walk, featuring Stephanie Renee Casso & her sculptural Flatbush landscape installation, and Keka Marzagao showcasing her photography installation “Women of Flatbush” — with live music & refreshments.

Scott Sharrard & the Brickyard Band at Bar Chord
When: Thursday, January 12 at 9pm.
Where:1008 Cortelyou Road between Coney Island Avenue and Stratford Road.
What: Looking for a lively Thursday night? Come out for what promises to be a “guitar shredding, soul singing” good time.

Makeda Thomas: Open Rehearsal & Artist Discussion
When: Friday, January 13 at 4pm.
Where: Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, West Quad Center, Room 205
What: Acclaimed Caribbean-American choreographer Makeda Thomas presents a free, open rehearsal as part of her CUNY Dance Initiative residency at Brooklyn College, showcasing excerpts from her latest body of work, which is a series of artistic explorations of the metaphors for art and technology that come out of Afrofuturist culture.
