Did You Know? Quaker Cemetery Still Active In Prospect Park

Quietly resting off Center Drive, south of Long Meadow, is a 164-year-old Quaker cemetery. Maintained by the New York Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the cemetery predates Prospect Park and remains the only privately owned land in the park.

Still an active burial ground for members and former members of New York Quarterly Meeting (NYQM) and their immediate family, the cemetery is home to over 2,000 permanent residents, including actor Montgomery Clift, who passed away in 1966. Don’t ask for the location of his marker, though, because groundskeepers (at the request of the Clift family) won’t tell you.

As tempting as it might be to head straight over to Prospect Park to walk the historic grounds, the cemetery is closed to the public. That said, the NYQM will occasionally offer tours, so we’ll keep an ear out and let you know if any pop on the radar.
