Following a devastating fire at 1434 Flatbush Avenue that killed one man and injured 16 other people, Councilman Jumaane Williams has opened his office (4517 Avenue D) for clothing and non-perishable food donations for those impacted by the blaze, and the Haitian-American Community Coalition has established a fund for the victims.

The two-alarm fire that broke out early on the morning of Wednesday, November 19 at 1434 Flatbush Avenue, just above the Eglise Baptiste Clarte Celeste Church, left seven families homeless. They have stayed in temporary shelter provided by the Red Cross and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and the day after the fire, several families stayed at Williams’ district office while waiting to go to their hotel.

“I’m deeply saddened by the fire that claimed the life of one member of our community last week and injured many others,” Williams said in a prepared statement. “My prayers for peace and comfort are with the family and victims, some of which stayed at my district office on Friday evening waiting for their temporary housing to be worked out. I thank the Fire Department, the Red Cross, local clergy and neighbors for their immediate efforts to assist in this crisis, including providing comfort and temporary shelter. I am now asking for anyone with means to lend a hand as well. These families have lost everything they possess. Let us pull together for our own during their desperate time of need.”

If you have questions about the donations, call Williams’ Director of Community Outreach Farah Louis at 718-629-2900 or email flouis@council.nyc.gov.
