The Day: A World Cup Win, Star-Crossed Real Estate and the Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
United States soccer fans rejoiced last night with a 2-1 victory versus Ghana in the first 2014 FIFA World Cup matchup for our men’s squad. If you missed the game, check out our list of local bars and restaurants to watch the team’s next match on Sunday against Portugal.
Here’s some local news to get your day started:
- We saw lots of locals out enjoying the summer-like weather in the nabe yesterday. Some of you took to the sidewalks, spying the Williamsburgh Savings Bank clock tower, grabbing a local cup of coffee and meeting friends for drinks at Habana Outpost. Others made it to Fort Greene Park to look at architecture on Washington Park and make sand art with other moms in the sunshine. We’re most jealous of one local who had a relaxing view of the blue skies from their hammock.
- A wood-framed, Italianate townhouse on South Elliot Place may have sold to Matthew Barney and Björk for $1.99 million, the New York Observer reported. The two-family home, built in 1854, is part of the Fort Greene Historic District. If the rumor turns out to be true, the stars could have scored a real gem in the nabe.
- The fifth annual Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival kicks off tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. performance at Long Island University Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater. The Eric Frazier Jazz review will spend the night whetting your palate for the festival, which happens 3 p.m. at Fort Greene Park on Saturdays from July 26 to Sept. 6. General admission tickets are $15, while students and seniors get a $3 discount with ID. Get your tickets on the theater’s website or by calling the box office at (718) 488-1624.
