The Day: Restaurant Openings, Basketball Rivalries and Film Festivals
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
It’s getting warmer in the nabe, but that doesn’t come without a price – today brings heavy rain showers with the spring-like temperatures, according to the National Weather Service. But the high today is 51, so shed those winter layers for the rain coat. The warm air gets a little cooler this weekend, but it’s the perfect time to enjoy the season before Mother Nature dumps more snow on the city. If you have fun outdoors this weekend, don’t forget to share your photos in The Nabe’s Flickr group.
- Looking for a new place to grab a bite? Head to Colonia Verde, a new Latin American-style restaurant that opened on Feb. 18 on DeKalb Avenue. It’s owned by the husband-and-wife team behind Comodo in Soho. The new site features an all-new menu, which is full of asado-style food cooked over a wood-fired grill. Colonia Verde is located at 219 DeKalb Avenue in Fort Greene.
- Long Island University Brooklyn will host Wagner College tomorrow afternoon as the women’s basketball teams tip off in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Blackbirds and the Seahawks invite all girls and women – excluding those of high school age – to the game free of charge. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center, located at 161 Ashland Place, between DeKalb Avenue and Willoughby Street.
- Saturday also marks the beginning of the BAMkids Film Festival, which celebrates the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 16th year of sharing movies with kids. More than 70 films from across the globe are on the lineup. The fest also includes other features, shorts, live performances, fimmaker Q&As and more. The film fest runs all weekend, so there’s something for every movie lover.
