The Day: Poetry Reading, Electropop and the Return of the Brooklyn Flea
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
There’s a chance of rain this morning, with more to come as the week continues, according to the National Weather Service. The good news is that you can finally put away your winter coat, with expected highs in the mid-60s today. Just remember your galoshes, locals.
- The week is halfway through and what better way to celebrate than with a poetry reading and wine? Long Island University Brooklyn and Greenlight Bookstore come teamed up to present a reading by poet Willie Perdomo tonight. An alumnus of LIU Brooklyn’s MFA program, Perdomo will read selections from his third and most recent collection, “The Essential Hits of Shorty Bon Bon,” followed by a discussion with author and LIU professor Jessica Hagedorn. This free event will be followed by a wine reception. The reading starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street.
- Come groove to the music of Iyadede tomorrow night as Brooklyn Independent Media’s B-Side series continues. From Rwanda to Belgium to Brooklyn, Iyadede’s travels have influenced her sound. Fans of Janelle Monáe won’t be disappointed by this free concert at BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., but space is limited, so get there early to snag a spot. If you miss it though, don’t worry: the performance will be simulcast next door at the Hungry Ghost Café.
- Spring is here and so is the Brooklyn Flea. The outdoor market returns to Fort Greene this Saturday, setting up shop in the schoolyard of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School on Lafayette Avenue, between Vanderbilt and Clermont Avenues. Purveyors of vintage goods, handmade gifts and the finest street food in Brooklyn will be there from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday throughout the spring and summer.
