The Day: NYC Marathon, Brooklyn Nets and the End of a Market Season

Children trick-or-treated all throughout the nabe last night, bringing spooky and sweet characters to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. What’s the best costume you saw last night, locals? (Photo by Amanda Woods)

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Halloween is done, but there’s more to celebrate this weekend. Runners will use part of the nabe for the New York City Marathon road race on Sunday. However, if your car is parked within the path of the marathon, you need to move it by Saturday night. Beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday, the NYPD will tow all vehicles left along Lafayette Avenue from Flatbush Avenue to Bedford Avenue, and on Bedford Avenue starting at Lafayette Avenue and heading North. No parking is allowed on these streets on Sunday after the race.

  • The Brooklyn Nets kick off their home season tonight at 8 p.m. in the Barclays Center. The Nets play the defending champion, the Miami Heat, and will honor head coach Jason Kidd before playing in front the home crowd. Kidd’s No. 5 will be raised to the rafters, as he becomes the sixth player in Nets’ franchise history to have his number retired. “The Captain” played six seasons with the team, leading to franchise-record win totals and back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals.
  • Police are asking for the public’s help in locating three suspects who held up a grocery store on the border between Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant on Oct. 28, according to Fort Greene Patch. Two men entered the Greene Food Deli, located at 397 Classon Avenue, just before 9 p.m. Monday, according to police. One suspect stayed outside as a lookout, while the other two suspects pulled a gun on the store clerk. The victim handed the suspects $300 in cash and they fled in an unknown direction. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477)  or submit a tip online.
  • Saturday is the last day of the fall season for the Fort Greene Artisan Market. For 10 years, the market has provided an outlet for local artists and designers to show and sell their wares in a central location. Only independent design, crafts and fine arts are displayed at the market, so if you want to pick up some Christmas gifts early, make one last trip before the market opens back up in May by stopping by the DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park corner of Fort Greene Park.
