The Day: Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations and a Spa for Kids

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

It should be another mild day in the neighborhood, according to the National Weather Service, with temps around the mid-40s. It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, and we have the info for local commemorations.

  • Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Town Hall Meeting at the Brooklyn Christian Center, 1061 Atlantic Avenue, Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Worship Service and Scholarship Award Presentation at Zion Baptist Church, 523 Washington Avenue, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m.
  • Martin Luther King Celebration, Emmanuel Baptist Church, 279 Lafayette Avenue, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

  • A Kids Dream, a new spa at 549 Myrtle Avenue will cater exclusively to children, reported DNAinfo. The kid spa will offer blow-outs, candy facials and glitter manicures to the underage crowd. Treatments will include also educational sessions with an iPad.
  • Plans to overhaul 470 Vanderbilt Avenue by adding retail space and a new mixed-use building next door are underway, reported Brownstoner. Community Board 2 renewed permits on Wednesday to to build 376 residential units and convert the courtyards of the building to retail space. The 12-story building will  include 85 units of affordable housing, out of a total of 376 apartments.
