The Day: Basketball, a New Restaurant and Brooklyn Brass Fest

It looks like the temperature is slowly creeping up the thermometer. Today’s high will be 36 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, almost ten degrees warmer than yesterday. Who else is getting cabin fever from the cold? Let us know your plans for the warm weather this weekend, locals.

- The United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships kick off today with the St. Joseph’s College women’s basketball team, the Lady Bears, going against Florida’s Ave Maria University. The Lady Bears have led the the USCAA and NCAA divisions in defense throughout the season. The game starts at 1 p.m. today and if you can’t make it down to Uniontown, PA to be there in person, you can still watch it online here for a small fee.
- Come down to Myrtle Avenue tomorrow to welcome the Nabe’s newest restaurant, The Runner. Celebrate with head chef Andrew Burman at the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, which will include sample homemade cocktails and food from the restaurant’s wood-fired stove. The festivities start at 4 p.m. at 458 Myrtle Avenue.
- Mardi Gras may have passed, but don’t worry if you missed the music: This weekend the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and Long Island University Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater present the first annual Brooklyn Brass Fest. The festival will feature workshops, classes and concerts, including a tribute to the trumpet player Lester Bowie on Saturday. Day passes are $20 and tickets to the tribute concert are $15, but the festivities are free to all students. Check out the full schedule here for the times and locations of each event.
