Cultish Black Seed Bagels Now Available At Whole Foods: Would You Go Out Of Your Way For One?
When the folks behind Mile End opened Black Seed Bagels on the Lower East Side this past spring, the demand was so intense that they closed down to take a breather after five days in business. Now you can get a taste of that insanity a lot closer to home, as the Montreal-style bagels are being sold at the Gowanus Whole Foods (3rd Ave at 3rd St) as of today.
The bagels, which Eater’s Robert Sietsema described as “smaller than its New York counterpart, a little less dense, a little more unevenly browned (though not always), and the hole in the middle tends to be slightly bigger,” will only be available for bulk purchase at Black Seed’s own outposts and this Whole Foods. You’ll find six varieties — plain, poppy, salt, sesame, multigrain, or everything — at $1.50 each, or you can add Black Seed’s homemade cream cheese or butter for $2.50.
One might argue that we already have plenty of great bagel options in the area — though, admittedly, no Montreal-style spots. And these are supposed to be one of the best cheap eats in the city. So do you think you’ll head to Gowanus for a taste?
