Crime Report: Attack at Applebee’s, Assaults and Thefts on Trains

Police arrested a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy who were allegedly part of a group that attacked two men at the Applebee’s at 395 Flatbush Avenue Extension on Feb. 22. A witness told police that he had seen the two teenagers slash one man, 22, in the neck and another man in the hand. The 22-year-old was taken to Kings County Hospital and the other man was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center.

The 17-year-old is charged with gang assault in the second degree, assault in the third degree, riot in the second degree and disorderly conduct, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. The office could not provide information on the 15-year-old as he is being charged in Family Court.

Including the above crime, 22 felonies and seven arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct between Feb. 17 and Feb. 22. Locals also reported assaults, thefts on the subway and thefts from stores and restaurants.

Assaults

-A 43-year-old woman told police that her 22-year-old son had allegedly grabbed her phone and physically threatened her during an argument in front of his younger sister on Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. in their home in the Walt Whitman Houses. Police arrested Shabar Williams the next day. He is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the third degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

-Police arrested Tanisha Brown, 22, for allegedly slashing a 20-year-old man with a knife on the arm after he argued with her brother on Feb. 20. He was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center for treatment. She is charged with assault in the third degree, menacing in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree and harassment in the third degree, according the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Assault at Tillary Street Women’s Shelter

A 52-year-old resident of the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter allegedly was punched in the face and thrown to the ground in a fight with another resident who purportedly cut in front of her in the cafeteria line on Feb. 21. The victim was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center for treatment of cuts and bruises to her face and knee after the other woman allegedly punched her and threw a garbage can at her.

After a search, police arrested Sharieta Simpson, 32. She is charged with assault in the third degree, menacing in the second degree, criminal possession in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Theft at Tillary Street Women’s Shelter

A resident of the Tillary Street Woman’s Shelter told police that someone had taken her wallet, containing her Citibank debit card, New York State identification, Social Security card and insurance card, from her locker while she was taking a shower on Feb. 18 at 8 a.m.

Street Assaults

-A 65-year-old man told police he was hit on the head with a beer bottle when he was walking on Grand Avenue toward Fulton Street on Feb. 22 at 12:20 a.m. He told police that he thought the bottle had been thrown from the Fulton Grand at 1011 Fulton Street. Police checked the bar’s security camera, but did not see anyone throwing bottles.

-A 29-year-old man told police he was attacked from behind when he was walking on Putnam Avenue toward Irving Place on Feb. 22 at 2 a.m. He was taken to Kings County Hospital for stitches for cuts to the back of his head.

Smartphone Theft

A masked man allegedly threatened a 29-year-old woman with a hard object covered by a sock and stole her cellphone in the lobby of her building in the Walt Whitman Houses on Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m. She told police the man had contacted her saying he’d read a notice she’d posted in a free classified advertising the website backpage.com. She said he told her he lived in the same building, and arranged to meet her in the lobby. He came wearing socks over his head and hands and demanded her Samsung Galaxy S3.

Theft at Brooklyn Hospital Center

A Brooklyn Hospital Center worker told police on Feb. 18 that her 8th floor office in the Department of Surgery had been broken into and $120 had been stolen from her desk. She told police that the door lock had been broken and office supplies were scattered across her desk.

Theft from Grocery Store

Police arrested a 47-year-old man after he allegedly fought with supermarket workers who tried to stop him from stealing photographs and Oscar Mayer ham from the Key Food store at 325 Lafayette Avenue on Feb. 21. The store manager was scratched on his neck and back in the fracas, police said. Hassell is charged with assault in the third degree, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Theft from Restaurant

A thief stole a bottle of 1800 Tequila and $600 from Castro’s Restaurant at 511 Myrtle Avenue on Feb. 21 between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. A security camera showed the thief entering the store and stealing the money from an unlocked cabinet under the cash register, police said. The restaurant was unlocked, but not open for business at the time, according to police.

Theft from Apartment Building

A 47-inch LCD television was stolen from the storage unit in a co-op building on Hall Street near Willoughby Avenue on Feb. 14, police said.

Theft at Pratt Institute of Art

A 19-year-old Pratt student came back from class at 5 p.m and found his Apple MacBook Pro and his Apple wireless mouse had been stolen from his dorm room on Feb. 21. He had locked the door, but his suitemate’s door had been unlocked, police said.

Forged Check

A worker at Falcon Jewelry Manufacturing Company in the Brooklyn Navy Yard told police on Feb. 18 that two checks, totaling $2,498 had been forged and then cashed at a check cashing store. She told police that the forger had used the company’s corporate name, but not the one it uses for doing business.

Thefts on Public Transit

-A 59-year-old woman told police that a man had snatched her bag, with her Samsung cellphone, MCU ATM card and Capital One credit card, while she was going down the stairs in the Clinton-Washington C train station on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. She described the thief as 6-foot-4, 190 pounds and between 30 and 35 years old, police said.

-A 23-year-old woman told police that a thief had stolen her wallet, with her USAA debit card, Wells Fargo debit card and military identification, while she was riding the G train on Feb. 20 at 5:20 p.m. She told police that she boarded the train at the Clinton-Washington stop and noticed her wallet was missing after she felt someone pressing against her. She told police that the thief fled at the Classon Avenue stop.

-A 51-year-old woman told police she got on a crowded bus on Lafayette Avenue at Fulton Street carrying her iPad mini in her shoulder bag on Feb. 19 at 10:45 a.m. When she looked down, she saw that that her bag was open and her iPad had been stolen.

Theft from Car

A 44-year-old woman told police a DVD player, iPad, a cellphone and headphones had been stolen from her car parked on Greene Avenue near Waverly Avenue on Feb. 19. She told police that the rear passenger window had been broken. The thief bled on the inside of the car, police said.

Credit Card Fraud

A 28-year-old man told police on Feb. 19 that when he checked his credit report he discovered someone had tried to open six credit card accounts under his name. He told police that one card with Bank of America had been opened and used successfully, but the bank closed the account and cleared the charges. He also told police that he had tried to file his tax returns, but found that they had already been filed.

Cellphone Fraud

A 51-year-old man told police on Feb. 22 someone had used his personal information to open a Verizon cell phone account in his name.

Truck Theft

An electrician told police that his work van, a 2005 Ford E250, was stolen on Feb. 17 from where he had parked it on Gates Avenue near Washington Avenue. He told police that he found a piece of plastic from the right rear view mirror on the ground.

Domestic Assault

A 29-year-old woman told police that her boyfriend had beaten her with a cellphone charger cable on Feb. 22. She said he came home drunk at 5:15 a.m. to their apartment on Ashland Place near DeKalb Avenue and accused her of having affair before whipping her with the cable on her shoulders. She refused medical attention, police said.

Police arrested Luis Alay, 33. He is charged with attempted assault in the second and third degrees, assault in the third degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, aggravated harassment in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the King’s County District Attorney’s office.
