Council Member Gonzalez Backs Out Of Tuesday Debate

A 38th District Council debate scheduled for Tuesday evening by Transportation Alternatives, Turning Point and Purpose ended up being a one-sided affair after incumbent Council Member Sara Gonzalez failed to attend, according to an article by Gotham Votes 2013. Candidate Carlos Menchaca participated in the forum alone.

Although Council Member Gonzalez declined to comment, campaign spokesman Michael Tobman explained to Gotham Votes that “some of the community groups [critical of Gonzalez] have a relationship with the challenger,”  but refused to elaborate any further than that.

General counsel and legislative director for Transportation Alternatives, Juan Martinez, told Gotham Votes that any pro-Menchaca allegations about the forum were “ill-founded.”

The New York City Democratic primary is scheduled for September 10.
