Cortelyou’s Tot Lot Remained Open Last Night
Cortelyou’s Tot Lot was open last night.
Despite word from the Flatbush Family Network that Cortelyou Road’s Lt. Narvaez Tot Lot would be closed at night by the Parks Department due to press coverage, local concern and pressure from Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacob, the park on the corner of Argyle and Cortelyou had its gate left open last night.
The park was supposed to be closed at 9pm last night by the Parks Department. I visited the park at about 10:15pm to see the gate open with older man sitting on a bench in the dark in the back corner of the park. That’s not exactly a scene that evokes terror — in fact, at this point, the street was quite active and felt safe as can be — but the fact remains, the park was supposed to be closed.
During another visit at midnight, no one appeared to be in the park but the gate remained open. The street was mostly emptied except for a small group of teenagers in front of the nearby library. It was a quiet scene and nothing seemed to be happening at all. It was a normal Tuesday night.
I’ll be checking in throughout the week but the biggest test for the park is the weekend. Will it be locked by then? Will there be more nightime activity? If you spot illegal activities, contact the NYPD and let us know in the comments.
