Cops Charge 23-Year-Old Driver Involved In Fatal Crash On Gravesend Neck Road
Cops arrested the driver of white van who struck and killed a 77-year-old woman last week while she crossed Gravesend Neck Road near East 21st Street.
The NYPD says 23-year-old Zafrom Ghafoor has been charged with failure to yield and failure to exercise due care for the fatal crash.
According to authorities, Ghafoor was driving a 2005 Ford Econoline van south on East 21st Street on December 24 when he made a left turn onto Gravesend Neck Road. He slammed into a 77-year-old woman who was crossing the street, police say. Cops did not provide the identity of the woman.
The Daily News reports there is no crosswalk on Gravesend Neck Road at that intersection. However, Ghafoor would have arrived at a stop sign before he made the turn.
The septuagenarian suffered head trauma and was unconscious when first responders arrived at the scene. She was taken to Coney Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.
Ghafoor reportedly remained at the scene after the crash.
Earlier this month, an MTA bus driver was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian after he slammed into an 62-year old woman who was crossing the street at Avenue Z and East 17th Street. Another elderly woman was killed in December when her car was struck while while making a left turn at Emmons and Nostrand avenues. The other driver involved in that crash has not been charged, police say.
