There are few topics that can drag otherwise amicable neighbors into fisticuffs, throwdowns, and sometimes — all out war.

And pizza is definitely at the top of that list.

Food experts love to wedge their way into those raging feuds over the perfect slice. Every list claims to be definitive, every taster claims to have the ideal palate — based on what seems like a subjective criteria: taste (Thin crust or thick? Crunchy or doughy? Sweet sauce or spicy? White pizza or classic tomato?)

Senior critics from Vox Media’s New York Eater put in their two-cents today with the ‘Neighborhood Pizzeria Hall of Fame’ list, and awarded Kensington’s Korner Pizza a Golden Slice Award. NY Eater critics laud the “humble neighborhood slice joints” and contend that those mainstays are long overdue for their own accolades — separate from the fancy, upper-crust wood, coal and brick-oven pies.

The Golden Slice award list includes 10 pizza joints, but we loved seeing Korner Pizza listed first.

NY Eater says:

The regular cheese slice is perfection itself, with a lighter-than-air crust, thin coating of tomato sauce, and an extravagance of good cheese. For vegans, the broccoli rabe hero is recommended.

Many neighbors, however, already know that Korner Pizza must be doing something right — they’ve been serving slices on the same corner of Church Avenue, run by the same family, since 1966. In fact, it’s now the oldest business on Kensington’s four-block commercial strip, according to owner Anthony Imburgia.
