Coney Island's Publicity Para(web)sites

(Screenshot from Davina Cukier’s The Future of Coney Island website)

Thanks to one of our readers for checking the Future of Coney Island website. We had reported, based on information gleaned from Curbed and Gowanus Lounge, that the Future of Coney Island site had been taken over by a porn site and were advised to not visit the site for fear of malware infection.

But after our reader, Joe Public, wrote in commenting that the site was still up and that it was running as a legitimate site, I decided to risk an infection and do some fact checking.

I can’t confirm or deny anything about the safety of the site, but in a message posted on the landing page, the domain owner claims that her site has no relation to a porn site. She has indicated that her site had been hijacked recently, but that the situation has now been resolved. It seems that she is also looking to sell the site to any willing buyer.

This domain name must be the hottest ticket in town, because there does appear to be at least one other similar URL with a www. It looks like there are some hucksters out there just looking to make a few bucks out of poor Coney Island’s demise (or future).

If anyone else has anything to add to this little mystery, please feel free to write.
